The Wheel of Health, designed by Duke Integrative Medicine, is based on the proven connection between the mind, body and spirit, and a dynamic relationship between the client and the coach that is constantly being re-evaluated and redesigned. The Wheel of Health encourages awareness and provides a tool for looking at our lives and identifying changes we can make to create a more nurturing, healthy lifestyle. The Wheel of Health addresses the nine concepts listed below.

MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is at the core of the Wheel of Health. It can influence the health and well being of our mind, body and spirit. Mindfulness includes:
• Paying attention without judgment
• Being aware
• Reconnecting with our body, soul and life
• Being present

MOVEMENT AND EXERCISE
The positive effects of exercise and movement have been well documented. The Wheel of Health encourages us to be mindful of our relationship to exercise and movement.

NUTRITION
This encourages mindfulness in our relationship to food and how it affects us. A healthy diet can enhance overall health.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
This part of the Wheel of Health encourages mindfulness towards our physical space. We may ask ourselves:
• Where do we spend most of our time
• Are they healthy spaces?
• Do they support optimal health?

RELATIONSHIPS
The Wheel of Health looks at the impact that our relationships have on our health and well-being. We are encouraged to reflect on the quality of our relationships.

PERSONAL DEVELOMENT AND SPIRITUALITY
Spirituality can help us find purpose and meaning in life. The Wheel of Health encourages mindfulness toward identifying our connections outside of ourselves.

MIND-BODY
The mind-body connection has been well established. Stress can have a significant impact on disease and overall health and well being.

PHARMACEUTICALS AND SUPPLEMENTS
There are many different options of allopathic medication, botanicals, supplements, and vitamins and the relationship they have to our health. The Integrative approach may incorporate all or some of in treatment plans.

CONVENTIONAL, COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS
The Wheel of Health reminds us that alternative therapies such as massage, Reiki, hypnosis, acupuncture, and supplements can be incorporated with conventional health treatment plans to enhance our ability to achieve optimal health.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
The role of prevention can not be underestimated. The Wheel of Health encourages us to be mindful towards taking care of our bodies, minds, and spirits. This includes paying attention to prevention and wellness, such as appropriate health screenings.
